This page provides a basic description of the process you can use to contact your legislators in the House and Senate. If you have further questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact your representative on the FBIAA National Executive Board.
Contacting Your Representatives — How to Find the Contact Information for Your Representatives:
- To contact a Member of Congress, use these public directories: Senate and House.
- Other Options — http://www.govtrack.us/congress/members — Enter your address with zip code. The following page will include the names of both your State’s Senators as well as your U.S. Representative. Clicking on their names will bring up a page that lists their official website under their picture. Follow the instructions from “part a” to find the contact information on their official website.
Methods of Contact: The two most effective means of relaying your message to your federal representatives is by calling their Washington D.C. office or by sending an email to their official “@Mail.House.Gov” email address. Advice on how best to contact your members is below:
- 1. Phone — This is generally considered the most effective means of contacting your Member of Congress. When you call your representative, be sure to call the D.C. office. If you call a local office, they will most likely direct you to the Washington office.
- 2. Email — If you do not want to call your representatives in Congress, email is another effective way to relay your message to your elected representatives.
Things to Remember When You Contact Your Member of Congress:
- State your name, zip code, and that you are an FBI Agent, but that you are contacting the Representative or Senator as a constituent and private citizen. It is important to state your zip code as it verifies that you are a constituent.
- State the purpose of your call or email and that you would like your message relayed to the member.
- Provide your opinion on the policy or issues you are calling or emailing about.
- If the member’s staff asks for your contact information, it is your choice if you want to give it to them. You are not required to provide anything more than a zip code. However, providing your address is usually a good way to ensure that you can be confirmed as a constituent and your message will be relayed.
