Washington, DC: FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) President Reynaldo Tariche issued the following statement on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks:
“The FBI Agents Association marks with solemn reflection the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by remembering all the victims and their families of this terrorist attack, including the sacrifices made by first responders.
FBI Special Agent Leonard “Lenny” Hatton was one of those first responders who lost his life at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Special Agent Hatton was on his way to work in the FBI New York Division office when he saw smoke and fire coming from the World Trade Center. On his own initiative, he rushed to the scene. Special Agent Hatton reported critical information to the FBI after the South Tower collapsed and assisted emergency responders. He lost his life when the North Tower collapsed.
We mourn the loss of Agent Hatton and of those FBI Special Agents and other responders who subsequently lost their lives or are suffering severe health impacts as a direct result of responding to the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA, flight 93. Despite these 9/11 sites being dangerous and unpredictable crime scenes, responders and investigators, including FBI Special Agents, diligently performed their responsibilities. Unfortunately, these responders were exposed to an unpredictable mix of toxic substances at these sites causing for some long term health problems and even death.
On this day, we remember with gratitude Special Agent Hatton and all of the 9/11 heroes who served our fellow citizens with courage and compassion.”
FBIAA will honor Special Agent Hatton and his family and other victims of the 9/11 attacks at the annual FBI Agents Association’s event, G-Man Honors: A Salute to FBI Heroes, in Washington, DC on Thursday November 17, 2016.
